Chestnuts roasting in an open fire and whistling your way through heavy snow is all very well, but sometimes it’s nice to escape the cold and the wet and the slippery pavements and go somewhere obscenely hot for the winter months in an attempt to top up that suntan (or show off that sunburn when you get back)! Alternatively, it’s also lovely to revel in the Christmas weeks a little and go somewhere even colder where you can see a reindeer in real life or meet the real Santa Claus rather than Barry from the pub that’s just in it for the eggnog and mince pies. Whatever your preference, the world’s a really big place and there’s always going to be a little bit of something for everyone this Christmas. And with that in mind, we have decided to throw together a few eclectic holiday destinations for you to check out whilst you’re deciding what to do this wonderful season. Have a look – and don’t forget to let us know what you think!

If you’re looking to get away from the Christmas vibe completely, there’s few better places than sunny Morocco – this veteran tourist destination has been a mainstay for friends and family all over for decades now, but almost all tourists visit during the summer months. This means prices will be down, the locals will be friendlier and all-in-all you can expect a more genuine, real experience. Because Morocco is a primarily Islamic country, don’t expect much Christmas celebration either. Do expect; amazing hospitality, friendly welcomes, and some amazing food! Hey, if that’s what you’re looking for then this is a great choice! Enjoy!

If you’re really looking to indulge in that Christmas feel though, there’s nowhere better than the North Pole, Alaska. During the Christmas break, this tiny little spot heats up as it prepares for a huge influx of tourists from all over the world – so don’t expect anything too secluded. However, it is a great experience and one that would be perfect for the kids (as long as they’ve got some very good coats!). The people are hospitable and it would be impossible to find a more quintessential Christmas experience – check it out!

And finally, if you’re looking for the Christmas experience but without the awful weather, look no further than Spain’s bright and sunny Canary Islands. Christmas is just as big a deal here as it is in the rest of Christian Europe, but here the Christmas trees will be jostling for space with the native palm trees, and you can enjoy unwrapping presents outside in the warm; perhaps on a beach or up the side of a sun-burnt mountain. The Canaries are wonderful islands to visit at any time of year, and each island has its own personality and flavour, so you can find just what you’re looking for in no time!
